The ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, Sri Lanka is a country with a rich history and culture and breathtaking scenery. The area around Ambalangoda contains some of the most beautiful palm-fringed beaches on the west coast.
Beaches
The sandy and palm fringed Urawatta beach just outside Ambalangoda is both beautiful and secluded. For surfing, the busier beaches of Hikkaduwa are only around 15 minutes away by tuk tuk.
Ambalangoda Town
Ambalangoda is a bustling town with many things to see and is regarded as the heart and soul of southern art and culture, with its gifted mask artists (see the famous mask workshop and museum), cultural dancing, historic bell tower and temple and as a centre for antiques.
Not far from the quiet beaches, the 390 hectare Madampe lake creates a unique biodiversity with a great variety of birds, wildlife, vegetation and fish. Take a boat trip and relax, whilst listening to the birds and enjoying the serenity of the lake.
Ambalangoda has both railway and bus stations and is about 13 km from the Southern Expressway (E01).
